β˜€ General

What is Portsmouth United Safe Summer?
A full-season youth violence prevention and community engagement initiative running April through August 2026 in Portsmouth, Virginia. It combines paid youth jobs, adult workforce certifications, signature events, summer camps, and late-night structured activities β€” all aimed at keeping young people engaged and supported.
Who runs Safe Summer?
Portsmouth United, in partnership with the Community Outreach Coalition, Love More 757, Skill Trade Center, Portsmouth Parks & Rec, Mobile Photo Lab, and Portsmouth Police. See the Partners page for the full list.
When does Safe Summer start?
The anchor launch is Youth Violence Prevention Week (YVPW), April 26 – May 1, 2026. The full season kicks off with the Summer Kickoff Event on May 29, 2026, and runs through August 2026.
How much does it cost to attend?
Most events and programs are free for Portsmouth residents. Some certification programs may have material costs β€” check each program page for details.

πŸ§‘πŸΎβ€πŸ’Ό Youth Programs

Who is eligible for the Youth Work programs?

πŸ‘·πŸΎ Adult Workforce

What certifications are offered?
Cybersecurity, Health & Safety (a single class earning 4 separate certifications), API Blind Course, and Alpha trips to the Skill Trade Center.
Can I really get federal-level jobs without a bachelor's degree?
Yes. Just one of the certifications in our Health & Safety class enables applicants to apply for federal positions that traditionally require a four-year degree. This is the fastest path from looking-for-work to federal-rΓ©sumΓ© we have ever offered.
How long do the certifications take?
Most certifications are multi-week programs. Specific schedules will be published on each program page as cohorts open.
Who is eligible?
Adults (18+). Portsmouth residency is prioritized but not always required. See each program for specific eligibility.
